Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Risk and Compliance Officer to lead and manage the risk and compliance functions at Lemonade Payments. This critical role ensures that our company operates within regulatory frameworks and maintains robust processes to mitigate risks while fostering a culture of integrity and trust. The Risk and Compliance Officer will work closely with leadership, ensuring the organization’s operational and strategic objectives align with compliance standards and risk management best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management
- Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management framework for Lemonade Payments
- Identify, assess, and monitor risks across the organization, including operational, financial, and reputational risks
- Conduct risk assessments for new products, services, and markets
- Design and enforce risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans
- Report regularly to the CEO and Board of Directors on risk exposure and mitigation progress
- Prepare and submit regulatory reports to relevant authorities (e.g., Central Bank, Financial Intelligence Units)
- Maintain accurate records of all compliance activities
Compliance Management
- Ensure Lemonade Payments complies with all applicable local, regional, and international laws and regulations
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes and emerging trends in the payments industry
- Oversee Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance programs
- Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance
- Conduct periodic compliance audits and assessments, addressing any identified gaps
- Oversee data privacy compliance, including GDPR, CCPA, and other relevant data protection laws
- Implement and maintain data security measures to protect customer data
- Conduct data protection impact assessments (DPIAs) as required
- Ensure compliance with international sanctions programs and maintain sanctions screening lists
- Conduct due diligence on customers and transactions to identify potential sanctions risks
Leadership and Collaboration
- Build and lead a team of risk and compliance professionals
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies and external auditors
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including legal, operations, and product, to embed compliance and risk management into all business activities
- Train employees on compliance policies, regulatory requirements, and ethical practices
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators and other relevant stakeholders
- Advise internal stakeholders on compliance matters
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of risk and compliance activities, including incidents, audits, and regulatory interactions
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations for executive leadership and stakeholders
- Ensure timely submission of required documentation to regulatory authorities
- Raise awareness of compliance risks and best practices within the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, or a related field. (Master’s degree preferred)
- 3+ years of experience in a Risk & Compliance role within the financial services industry (payments, fintech, banking)
- Strong understanding of AML/CFT regulations, data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), and sanctions programs
- Experience with KYC/CDD procedures, transaction monitoring, and suspicious activity reporting
- Proven track record of managing interactions with regulators and auditors
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities
- Certifications such as Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP), or equivalent are highly desirable
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certifications (e.g., CAMS, CFE, CIPP)
- Experience with regulatory reporting and examinations
- Experience working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- Knowledge of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency regulations
